How I Built My Portfolio

Hi there! I'm Mario — and I recently built my online portfolio from the ground up using Joomla 5. If you've ever thought about creating your own website but felt like it was “too techy” or overwhelming, I totally get it.

In this post, I’ll walk you through how I made it happen, in simple terms. Hopefully, it inspires you to start your own!

1. Starting with a Simple Plan

Before touching anything technical, I sat down and thought: What do I want my portfolio to include?

I decided on four main parts:

  • A homepage that welcomes visitors
  • A Portfolio section to show my work
  • An About Me page with a short intro and photo
  • A Contact section so people can reach out

This helped me focus and avoid overcomplicating things.

2. Why I Chose Joomla 5

There are lots of platforms out there — like WordPress, Squarespace, and Wix — but I chose Joomla 5. Why? Because it gives you a lot of control, it’s flexible, and it's built for performance.

Yes, it takes a bit more learning at first. But once I got the hang of it, I was able to build a site that looked and worked exactly the way I wanted — without needing a ton of plugins or extra tools.

3. Laying Out the Design

Before building anything in Joomla, I made a rough sketch of the layout — just on paper. That helped me visualize where everything should go: the banner (hero section), my work samples, a bit about myself, and how people could get in touch.

I kept the design clean and simple. Less clutter, more clarity!

4. Making It Mobile-Friendly

One big thing I paid attention to was responsive design. That’s just a fancy way of saying the website should look good whether you’re on a phone, tablet, or desktop.

Joomla makes this pretty manageable with its template system, but I still did some custom tweaking with HTML and CSS to get things just right.

5. Adding Personality with Style and Animations

I wanted the site to feel modern and a bit fun — so I added scroll animations, subtle transitions, and a parallax background here and there (you know, when things move slightly as you scroll).

It’s nothing over-the-top — just enough to make the site feel lively and professional at the same time.

6. Testing Everything

Once everything was live, I checked it on my phone, laptop, and a tablet to make sure it all looked good and worked properly. I also asked a few friends to test it out and give honest feedback.

Their input was super helpful, and I made a few small changes based on what they noticed.

Looking Back

Building my portfolio with Joomla 5 was a learning experience, but I’m so glad I did it. Now I have a space online that I can proudly share with others — and it truly represents who I am and what I do.

If you're thinking about making your own site, I say go for it. Start small, keep it simple, and take it one step at a time. You might be surprised at what you can create!

Thanks for reading — and if you want to chat or show me your portfolio, I’d love to see it. 😊
